I guess it is not a question of whether it is legal or you think it is alright for others to use your content (plagiarism) but rather how rampant it is and how to deal with those that are a bit or smarter. Those that just copied and paste as it is are just the 'not so smart" fella which you can just ignore unless it is a page or site with very high rank PR.
You can ignore those low rank PR site (scraper sites) as you have rightfully pointed out it might not be worth the money to pursue the case.
If it is hig PR site then I think it might be worth the effort to go after it. On another foot note, the bigger problem are those who spin your article by changing some words , rearranging paragraph..It is difficult to deal with this pseudo plagiarism...
Those are the one you need to watch out for...

Thanks for weighing in Lucy!

There's an update to this story. It turns out that the employer is a family friend, and his point of view is that he's doing the family a favor by hiring this family member. I dunno, but with friends like him, this family doesn't need any enemies.

I agree with your point of view; this employer should be reported, otherwise, he'll do the same thing to his next employee.

certainly she should report the employer, after she has a new job of course. How could you continue to work for him anyway?? If he is not reported we all know he will keep doing the same thing (and possibly worse) in the future.

Donna - Thanks for letting people know about the ebook. I'm excited to help people who normally don't have a voice online let people know about the awesome things they do.

One additional thought for your readers: You may find it easier to write something if you try to answer the question, "What's one thing other HR pros should do in 2011 to become better at what they do?"

Cheers!
Chris

Fair point, but I suppose like any other career choice, it's a good idea to plan for it before hand.

I look at people like Ben Euanks and Lance Haun who have built incredible online brands while working for other corporations. Should either of them strike it out on their own, they've built a great community of potential clients.

At EMC, I tell people that they need to network for their next role well before they're ready for it (or perhaps even know what it is). I think this is the same thing.

No need to eat PB&J sandwiches (unless you want to, because they're delicious!).

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your comment! I've been following your blog for a while now, and I'm delighted that you've taken the time to visit my blog and leave a comment.

Regarding my blog post of the 300 number to HR fame, I guess I was thinking along the lines of those who have been practicing (doing) their craft outside the World Wide Web arena for a number of years, and for whatever reason, have decided to strike out on their own and launch a consultancy or business in their area of expertise. Should it really have to take two years before they're recognized or before they can be heard above the din of the World Wide Web? That's an awfully long time to be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I actually think it's a bit odd that you consider two years a long time to reach expert status.

In any other profession (except perhaps professional sports), two years is just getting your feet wet. It's building a foundation. It's no where near long enough to be considered an expert in anything.

Two years of blogging and your expert? That sounds like an exceptionally short curve to me!

And I think what you find is that it often creates artificial expertise. People who parrot a lot of the same generic crap you find everywhere on the web are suddenly considered experts in things that they have no real expertise in.

Expertise requires doing... often and well.

Maybe it takes two years for the recognition to come, but does traditional marketing really offer faster results? And if so, how much does that cost?

Blogging as a marketing strategy is really just networking online (if you do it right).
